Luther Vandross於1951年4月20日出生於美國紐約最北部的Bronx區，作為最偉大的黑人男歌手之一，擁有超過兩千萬張的唱片銷售記錄，被他富有魔力的嗓音所征服的聽眾數以億計。在R&B音樂這個年輕人的世界裡，Luther Vandross稱得上是大器晚成，直到他三十歲時才發行了第一張專輯《Never Too Much》，之後便一發不可收，之後的十三張專輯都達到了白金銷量，被稱為是80年代黑人音樂三巨頭之一，另兩人是鼎鼎大名的Stevie Wonder和Michael Jackson。
他唱慢歌的時候，就像是一位愛的紳士，把樂迷當作是心所愛的人，帶著深情的凝視，細細的表達自己的愛意，他唱快歌的時候，就像是一位全民情聖，帶著自信的神采，無時不刻的釋放著裝載了熱力與活力的愛情電波。這位把節奏藍調/靈魂唱得雋永、迷人的傳奇藝人在2005年7月1號，因2003年的中風所引起的併發症而辭世，享年54歲。
